My friend John Birch became involved in a project to help save the rainforest. And one of the activities he planned was quite peculiar: he decided to lock himself in one room of his house for a week, with no food, no entertainment, no electrical lighting and no heating. Only water,a camcorder to film his experience, a notebook and pen and a sleeping bag. He intended this to be both a spiritual journey and a sponsored activity to raise funds for and awareness of the Amazon Rainforest Foundation.

And so he did, last year, on the first week in December. And this is the book that narrates the journey through these seven days. With compassion (but never self-pity), humour and depth, we are taken to what would be a challenge for most of us, and teaches us what the human being can do if he or she puts his or her mind to it, and how we are not our possessions and shouldn't hold on so dearly to them, creating an endless chain of selfishness and consumerism.

I really became engulfed in this book and enjoyed it, apart frommaking me think a lot. I'm not sharing it because I'd love people to buy it and contribute to the rainforest cause John has done this for.
