John Marlow is having a few pints at the pub with some people whose jobs all have relation to the sea. Marlow starts recalling when you was young - around twenty years old, and he was enthusiastic about visiting Bangkok and starting work in a vessel. Most of this novella has to do with the badly-prepared voyage made by a ship - which is constantly referred to as "she"- which has to take a load of coal from England to Thailand. The ship is too old, and has not been preserved well, and on top of everything, this was going to be the Captain's first mission.

Theoretically, the narrative is based on Conrad's own experiences, so it's based on a true fact. I'd recommend this book - which is a short of preparation for the following "instalment" on the life of the main character, Marlow, who will move onto other vessels, other ships and other adventures, the most renown - and infamous - of which is narrated in Heart of Darknes.

---Also, it was included in French. The correlation moves on page by page approximately, and some of the blank spaces at the end of the page have to do with the translation, not with the text as Conrad intended.
